I don't really have much more to add to the other review praises, but I just talked to Panasonic 15 minutes ago, and they said that Pandora is to be released in a firmware update this summer. I'll take the chance.. I also asked,
DMP-BD85K versus vs DMP-BD85 the only thing the K denotes is the color of the unit. Some better deals can be found searching without the K. I paid 8 for mine delivered 2nd day air.

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I just got my BDP-S5000es yesterday. I had been using Sony's original BDP-S1 in our home theater and have enjoyed its picture and audio quality for the past 2 years. I have auditioned other Blu-ray players including the Pioneer Elite series, but never really saw or heard any clear cut reason to spend $$$$ to upgrade - until now.

The BDP-s5000es is an enormous improvement in both video and audio quality of any of the units that I have tried.

First, the picture. Stunning is the only way I can describe it. I am veiwing Blu ray movies through a 1080p projector on a 120" screen. If there are any problems with the image in terms of color, saturation or clarity, you'll see it with the picture that large. It is flawless. The few scenes I have been able to play so far all have better contrast, greater depth and more intensity than my previous player. In short, it looks as good as film to my eyes.

The sound is equally as impressive. Up until now, I have been using the audio processor in my Krell preamp to decode the 5.1 and 7.1 soundtracks with results that were far superior to the analog output of my older player. The downside was that I couldn't decode the Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD signals that many of the discs now have. The BDP-s5000es has and outstanding built in decoder for these HD formats and an equally impressive analog output stage that allows for the most realistic recorded audio presentation I have ever heard. The difference isn't subtle, but it is difficult to describe. An example of what I am talking about is in the the James Bond movie "Casino Royale". In one scene, James and Vesper walk out onto a terrace after losing a poker game to his rival. In the Dolby Digital soundtrack, the sounds of the city are all there in the background - clear, clean and pristine - a well recorded sountrack. However, when I played same scene using the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack through the analog outputs of the 5000es, it sounded like - correction - it felt like the walls of my room disappeared and I was outdoors. It was startling. It didn't sound like a great recording, it made me feel like I was there. The subtle spatial and sensory information that is lacking from many recordings was all there to be heard and felt.

As for the setup, it was very quick and easy. There was one small quirk that I noticed. Because I am using the players decoder and analog outputs, I needed to go into the audio setup of the Sony to adjust speaker levels and positions. The setup process went quickly enough as I was able to match all of the speaker levels up or down in 1/2dB increments except for the subwoofer. I needed to boost the output to the sub by 1.5dB but the Sony would only allow me to turn it down, not increase the level. I had to start over using the sub's output as the reference level and match the other speakers to it. Not a big problem, but a bit strange.

The network connection went without a hitch. I plugged in the cable and it immediately checked to see if there was an update for the firmware. This is an important reason to consider Sony when making a purchase. As I mentioned, I have the original Sony Blu Ray player and after 2 1/2 years, they are still offering software improvements which allow it to work flawlessly with the latest BD titles. I have updated that machine at least 7 times (from v1.1 to v4.2), all for free, and each time the machine works faster and better. There are not many companies out there that continue to support their products with free upgrades and for such a long period of time. Most just want you to buy the newest model rather than improve your current one.

Also, I saw a previous review about the loading time and thought I'd respond. There is a setting in the setup menu that decreases the time to boot up and load a disc dramatically by leaving the machine in kind of a standby mode. I didn't time it, but I'd say the few discs I've tried to play so far loaded in under 10 seconds with this mode turned on. The downside is that the unit uses more power to do this because it keeps the fan and processor running even when the power switch is off. My guess is that the previous reviewer has not turned that feature on (the default setting for this feature is "off").

Panasonic DMP-BD65 Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black) Review

This unit has exceeded all expectations. I bought this unit to view content from Netflix. The BluRay, DVD, Cd player aspect was the secondary purpose. Thus, my review is weighted 65% to Netflix performance and 35% the other features.

[Netflix] Only one word covers this: superb! Continuous HD quality. Resolution, colors, textures, movement, audio, etc... all are 100% superb and perfect. The controls are extremely responsive, which is a real treat after dealing with cable on demand the past few years. During playback, pause and play are instantaneous; like lightening.

[Streaming FF and Reverse] Time lapse is displayed in minutes, which is refreshing. After FF/Rev, you may have to pause for 2 seconds for content delivery to continue. So, if you hunt and peck for a spot more than 3 times, that will be frustrating. But, it is very responsive overall with very cool display features while you are using the FF and Reverse.

The onscreen Netflix Queue ops were also superb. You will still need your computer to manage your Queue but with this player you can rate, delete, and view your INSTANT entries. You also get a graphic of the dvd cover and a summary of the movie while you are scrolling through your queue. One feature I really liked is how TV series are handled; ei: one queue entry represents and gives drill down into say all 14 episodes of a TV series: very efficient and smart.

[Remote Control] It seems allot of thought went into the remote control. It will take a few times of use to become accustomed to it as some buttons stand out more than others. It is small, well balanced, and no thrills but effective. Also, while using Netflix, become accustomed to using the back or return button. Upon initially going to Netflix, there is a pause for the queue to load into memory. I have over 450 movies in my instant queue and the queue load time is about 5 seconds. So, if you go too far, you wait 5 seconds, then another 5 seconds, etc... I learned to use the back button after a few 5 second pauses ;-) Also, a nice feature, when you press stop and then resume a film later, playback resumes where you left off. This works even after shutting the unit off.

[BluRay/DVD/Cd] DVD/BluRay performance was excellent and boot up time was the fastest I've ever seen. The colors are rich as you would expect from a well built player. The 5.1 etc audio is identical to every other DVD player I've ever owned. One note, you cannot play a data/non video DVDs containing VOB, Avi, Divx, etc... type files. I was disappointed in this aspect but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.

[Network] Network setup was a breeze. I have a complex firewall finally tuned for high security. I was expecting a real wrestling match here. But, this device auto configured in no time. From the time I plugged it in to the time I was watching Netflix was literally under 5 minutes without reading the manual. I use a DHCP server on the firewall which made the auto configuration a breeze. My Network is setup to perfection. I use Fast Ethernet (10/100) devices with cat 6 wiring. To date, Netflix streams 100% HD!!!!!

Side note: this will not work out of the box as a wifi device. But, this is the main reason I choose this unit: I do not use nor do I want wifi in my house. If you want wifi, there is a separate accessory you have to buy. Also, there is a higher end model with wifi built in.

[Other features] Make sure to set your city as your default for the weather channel. I didn't think I would use the weather, but it is very useful. To me, youtube and Picasso almost put me to sleep. The additional features (usb/sd) were tested and work as expected. Also, the stock market screen is pretty cool too.

[Other Streaming: Amazon] I love Amazon. However, at .99 to watch 1 episode of a tv show, I will not be giving them much business... They have a great selection though, and the service works great through this unit.

[Other Streaming: network] This is a sore point for me: you cannot stream dvd content from a usb drive nor a network server... Research reveals these features are available in non US markets on this identical unit.

[Bottom line] I would highly recommend this unit if you desire Netflix streaming with a superb BluRay/DVD player attached.

The Panasonic DMP-BD10 was launched in September 2006, along with the company's plasma-type 1080p HDTV. The initial market price is around $1,500. Panasonic is rated to be the most favorite in the field owing to the report of their excellent quality DVD player and HDTV sets. The unit has been launched along with the company's proprietary EZ-Sync HDAVI feature, which enables viewers to connect and control multiple HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) units with a single remote.

LG BD550 Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

Let me get this out of the way up front: This is my first Blue-Ray Disc player.

I'm very pleased with this LG BD550 product. I wanted a product that would (a) play Blu-Ray Discs, and (b) let me watch streaming movies/shows over the internet using my Netflix account. This does both.

I considered the higher-end BD570 but decided against it because I did not need the built-in wireless capability, so I got the BD550 which just has the ethernet port, but no wireless (and saved about doing so). I already had an Apple Airport Express behind the media stand for streaming music from iTunes to my stereo, and I was able to configure it as a simple wireless ethernet bridge, so in order to connect the BD550 to the internet all I had to do was connect an ethernet cable from the Airport Express to the BD550. Once that was done, everything internet related simply worked "out of the box".

Blue-Ray audio/visual quality seems good to me.

The user interface is adequate and is reasonably responsive. I have no complaints with the remote.

One thing I didn't expect - the BD550 defaulted to 1080i. I'm not sure if that is normal for BD players, but I switched it to 1080p for playing BD discs.

Since it's connected to the internet, it will occasionally ask me if I want to update the firmware/software.

The unit does not generate much heat, and has no vents in the top or sides of the case, i.e. no vents to block, so I figured it was OK to place my Cable/DVR box on-top of it.

Of all the internet enabled functions (I think this is called "Netcast") I've tried four of them:

1. Netflix - Works as advertised. I have a 3Mbps internet connection and I'm pleased with the quality of streaming netflix video. Certainly it's not high-def quality, but good enough given the convenience. I wish it were easier to search for titles though. I can't really complain, it is good enough.

2. Pandora - This is really great. I'm a computer pandora user though on the computer it will occasionally throw in an ad or pause to ask you to confirm that you're still listening. I don't get either of these when playing music through Pandora on the BD550. I do wish, however, that one you've started a channel going that the interface would show a different graphic (like a near full screen CD artwork, a la iTunes, or any option besides the default screen).

3 & 4. Youtube and Picasa - I tried these out just for the heck of it, and they work, but I do not envision using these on a regular basis.

UPDATE: I recently upgraded from a 3Mbps internet connection to a 7Mbps internet connection. While Netflix was certainly usable with a 3Mbps connection, it is markedly better with the 7Mbps internet connection. I read that Netflix requires 5Mbps or greater to stream HD video.

After much dithering because of doubts about how this Blu-Ray player would mesh with my existing middle-aged audio setup, I heeded the professional opinions about how well this player upconverts DVDs.

As it turns out, connecting the Panasonic to my Sony CRT HDTV and connecting the optical digital sound output to my 5.1-channel receiver produced ideal results.

The audio through the TV is, of course, 2-channel and the digital sound to the receiver arrives as Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1, even if the format on a Blu-Ray disc is of a higher order. That is fine, as my receiver does not understand the newer formats such as Dolby Tru-HD. The setup and firmware upgrade were extremely smooth.

Picture quality is breathtaking, even on regular DVDs. My only minor complaint is that I don't see a way to display chapter time or time remaining.

The Digital Video Essentials Blu-Ray "HD Basics" disk (highly recommended for everyone) revealed that the HDMI video output will clip video levels below black or above white with some settings. This normally does not impact picture quality but does tend to interfere with proper setting of brightness and contrast controls. All settings in the Video menu except "Fine" clip below black, and "Fine" clips above white.

The solution here was to select "User" and set Brightness to +3 and Contrast to -1, with all other settings remaining at zero. This provides a nice, linear gray scale with no clipping.

So - don't let the user manual's complexity put you off - this player is easy and gives ideal results.

Musta been a sale of the day but I saw this 0 unit for 0 on Amazon. Bought it for my son for Christmas, along with 5 Blu-Ray movies (from Amazon, of course).

He was floored when he got it. He had 3 large bags of gifts to go home with but he wanted to take the Blu-Ray that night. (He has to walk up a long driveway which was covered with a foot of snow, he didn't care, the unit was going home on Christmas day.)

He bought me a Blu-Ray last year which you can upgrade over the internet or from a CD. Since he had just moved into his new place, there was no cable/internet service yet. I helped him upgrade the firmware on this unit by downloading the file to a flash drive, he just plugged it into the unit when he got home and ran the update.

Sweet, clean small unit.

I should have purchased 2 - we still have DVD only in the bedroom.

A lot of films that are currently being released are also being developed in the Blue-ray form which means you can watch these on a blu-ray player in HD, and surprisingly the prices of a blu-ray disc are very reasonable. For example, if you wanted to buy Batman: The Dark Knight you can be looking as cheap as £14.99 for the blu-ray format. That said, for a decent blu-ray player you can expect to pay anything from £150 - £300.

This player actually works quite well, once you know how to properly set it up and maintain it. The unfortunate thing is that, right out of the box, it will require a firmware update. Here is everything that you need to know:

- Many of the early reviews complained that it lacked a sharp, truly hi-def picture. That is because it shipped with a faulty programmed video chip. Thankfully, the firmware updates have corrected this problem... it now delivers picture quality comparable to a PS3 (I've compared them on my 50" 1080p TV).

- You will need to update the firmware for it to play the latest releases. This is not particularly difficult. You can find the latest firmware on the Samsung website, under product support. The firmware comes in the form of an ISO image. You will need to burn the ISO image to a CD-R using image burning software. I use DeepBurner, which is a freeware program that you can readily find by doing an internet search. Once you burn the ISO image to the CD-R, you simply place the disc in the player and it will perform the update.

- A number of people have complained that this player, even with the latest firmware, will not play new releases. Actually, in most cases these persons have a "full cache" problem. What this means is that the player's memory has residual java programming hanging around, preventing it from loading some newer java-heavy discs. This is easy to fix. Simply press and hold down on the FF button on the player itself (not the remote). This will clear the cache. You will then need to go into the player's menu and double-check the display settings, as they sometimes change as a result of this procedure. This almost always solves the problem.

- It has been my experience that when the firmware is updated, and the cache is properly cleared, the BDP-1000 will play any movie without a hitch. Using the latest firmware (at the time of this writing, version 1.6), this player works flawlessly. I have yet to encounter a blu-ray disc that it will not play. Considering that I picked this up on clearance for a very reasonable price, I am extremely satisfied. No, it will not display picture in picture video, nor can it handle BD-Live internet connectivity, as do the latest higher-end players. But it will play blu-ray movies with excellent picture quality, which is all that I really need for it do.

Once loaded and running, the BDP-S300 performed like a gold medal. The best Blu - ray Disc seen 1080p/24 or 1080p/60 or sensational. And for those with 720p displays or displays that accept 1080p input, the players performed very well even if the output is set for one or 720p or 1080i.

Summary: I bought this Blu-Ray player last July to watch movies and it has worked flawlessly for me from day 1. I am not a viewer who will use picture in picture (which this does not have) nor do I play any of the games which are on some of the discs. I wanted a Blu-Ray player which gives me full HD video and great sound. The audio sounds great on my surround sound system when I use it. Sometimes I just use the TV speakers and the audio is excellent. If you are interested in a Blu-Ray player with outstanding video and excellent sound this player is for you.

Strengths: Plays Blu-Ray Discs, upconverts standard DVDs. Full 1080p output. Good array of audio outputs.

Strengths: Great picture when playing Blu ray Disk. Connected all audio connections at once except Coax, and all worked automatically...Great sound.

While the Sony BDP-S300 is an entry level Blu-ray player, entry level doesn't necessarily mean cheap. You're getting a capable high definition video player. VD's is lackluster at best and it only decodes Dolby Digital Plus. If you already have a capable upconverting DVD player and don't care about the decoding of Dolby TrueHD and the myriad of high definition DTS formats, this may be the Blu-ray player for you.

Summary: Sony has finally come out their second generation Blu-ray player at half the original price of the original! The BDP-S300 looks like a bargain compared to their previous BDP-S1 model.

Besides the cost benefit, you get more with this player. Unlike the previous model the S300 can play CDs in addition to DVDs. In addition, it seems to load slightly faster than the previous model.

All in all, the BDP-S300 delivers what it promises.

The new BDP-S300 model can output 1920 x 1080p (progressive) high-definition video, currently the highest resolution high-definition signal available through an HDMI(TM) connection. The player supports various video formats, including MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1.

For those who own an HDTV set without HDMI, an analog component output for 1080i (interlaced) is available as well.

The new BD player is compatible with most standard DVDs and has the added feature of 1080p upscaling through HDMI to 1080p capable HDTVs, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.

Watching PIRATES I and PIRATES II I found the picture striking and vivid with no artifacts. My receiver is a delivers 5.1 DD so I am unable to take advantage of the uncompressed PCM codec. However, the Dolby digital audio track was quite impressive. All things considered, this an excellent player at a very good price.

This is an excellent BD Player for under $500! The picture quality is awesome!
Excellent upscaler quality for DVD movies

Below is mentioned that it can't be made region free. Only partially true. A California company already sells this model in a Multiregion (multi-region) version. It can play any Region A and B Blu-Ray Disc movie and display it on any TV that has HDMI input, regardless of video standard (PAL-SECAM-NTSC etc.)

This is a unit that we would buy for ourselves if it weren't for the fact that we couldn't make it region free, because we have a huge DVD collection with movies from regions 1 and 4. If you are going to play only region-free ("region 0") or region 1 discs then this unit is a great pick, especially because its cost/benefit ratio: great price and excellent image quality for DVDs - if the relative slowness of this unit doesn't bother you.

I haven't gone through all the bells and whistles yet, but the picture quality just floored me. Even my wife who really doesn't get the whole 'high def thing' was greatly impressed. We watched Pirates/Caribbean 2 and couldn't believe the quality.

Unlocking Regions for the Next Generation

It's a broadly known fact that many DVD playback devices (Players, recorders, etc) can be unlocked to play discs from around the globe.

Currently standard retail DVDs are commonly encoded with a region code which is intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played. Current regulations that relate to DVD players state that models must only play discs from regions were the players are sold - So simply, if you purchase a DVD player in the US (region 1) by default it should only playback DVDs from the same region (region 1) or DVDs that are region free (aka region 0).

As with most things in life the reason for this region system is cash and control, restricting DVDs by region means that the producers can release different versions of films in different regions or release films on different dates. Many web sites provide free step by step procedures which allow the owners of particular makes of DVD hardware to convert their units to region free status.

The ongoing battle of the next generation formats (Blu-ray and HDDVD) will soon be deciding the dominant format for future movie releases although it's worth remembering that the eventual demise the DVD is far from imminent - we now need to ask the question what new restrictions will the new formats bring and how will they impact on the consumer?

In common with DVDs, Blu-ray discs also employ a region based system but instead of nine numeric zones Blu-ray uses a simpler alpha based classification over three international zones: A (covering North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong and South-east Asia), B (covering Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand) and finally C (covering India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia).

You may be thinking its a much better system than the DVD region system but we need to look outside the regions. The famous worldwide brand Sony developed and heavily supports Blu-ray technology - lets not forget that Sony has its fingers in just about every stage of film production, systems such as region encoding are extremely lucrative to Sony and this quickly explains way Sony branded DVD players are near impossible to convert to region free.

Putting aside Blu-ray's region system the technology is also locked down with several layers of DRM (Digital Rights management). DRM is now common place in retail digital medium, in a nutshell DRM dictates what the consumer can or cannot with their purchased medium.

Looking towards the alternative format of HDDVD (High Definition DVD) the situation is totally different. Developed jointly by Toshiba and NEC the format current employs no region system however there are no guarantees this will always be the case. Presuming HDDVD stands well in it's format war with Blu-ray many think that pressure from film studios in the future could mean the format gaining it very own region system.

Like I said earlier - it's worth remembering that the eventual demise the DVD is far from imminent.

I've been using this Blu-Ray player now for over a year. When I first bought it I thought I would do more Netflix streaming than anything else with it. Setup was easy. There were a lot of firmware releases at first, seemed that every week there was a new one. They took a while to download and install.

I've found that I use the Pandora music feature more than anything else. It's easy to use and very high quality. The internal scaling chip makes all video look fantastic. As a result I opted to not pay extra for Blu-Ray movies from Netflix anymore because the regular DVD upscaling is so good.

It's a shame they discontinued this model, not a single problem.

Philips BDP7310/F7 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I was looking for a Blue Ray player I could use with my NetFlix subscription. I thought that was what I was getting with this player.
There are a number of players that will play your NetFlix streaming movies but this is not one of them it will play DivX which is a purchase the titles as you go company.
This was my fault as I did not read the specifications closely enough. If a Blue Ray player will play NetFlix titles it will specifically say so.
Otherwise this has been a very good player as far as I can tell and internet hook up and downloading the first firmware upgrade was easy.
Some titles take longer to load than others. Standard DVDs look better than on my old DVD player. Sound on Blue Ray through my amp is wonderful.
PS: If I am wrong on the NetFlix issue and someone out there has been able to use this player to access their NetFlix account and play streaming movies I would love to know about it. Would not mind being wrong at all. That this information could have been more clear is the only reason I did not give 5 stars.

Onkyo DV-SP506 1080p Upscaling Super Audio CD/DVD Audio/Video Player - Black Review

I was on the fence with this player, I narrowed my choices down to this Onkyo and a Pioneer Elite DV-58AV and ended up going with the Onkyo since it was lower cost and new (I could only find refurbished DV-58AV's at the time for 0 more). I'm happy to say I was not disappointed with this player. It passes DSD bitstream over HDMI straight to my Onkyo Receiver (TX-SR706) and the sound is as good as my old Sony DVP-S9000ES for SACD's, passing DSD to a my receiver was key to this though as I found that using it's internal DAC's for SACD wasn't as good as Sony ES SACD player. DVD-Audio also sounds very good when using this unit's internal DAC's using the Analog 5.1 channel out, in this case it did sound better than having it pass over HDMI like the SACD's. I actually bought this to only play SACD's & DVD-Audio primarily, which it does very well (especially at this price) so I was pleasantly surprised when I played a DVD in it, the up-conversion is done very well, it even does a better job of up-converting than my BluRay player (Sony BDP-S500) with standard DVD's. If you're looking for a great up-converting DVD player you can't go wrong, If you want to use this as a SACD player I have to say I was impressed when sending the DSD steam to the receiver, as for DVD-Audio I really don't have another player to compare it to, it sound good, not as good as it does with SACD's but much better than the CD versions of the albums. To sum up, this is a great multi-format player for the price, I think the majority of listeners & movie goers would be impressed with the quality and performance.

Which is the Best Console?

There are three main options when it comes to buying a console machine - the Nintendo Wii, the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Both the PS3 and 360 are just the same machine with more power and in the case of the PS3 a blue ray disk player.

The Nintendo Wii though in its latest incarnation took a radical change in direction with a greater melding of player with the machine.

This change was risky but paid off and the Wii has become wildly popular.

The Wii is also cheaper than its competitors, smaller with slightly lower graphic power.

In a straight competition because the Wii is so different to the other two in terms of how your now play with the controllers direct comparison even when playing identical games becomes harder. Take a game like Rock star's bully. The graphics on all three machines is fairly similar, but playing the game on the Wii gives a greater sense of satisfaction - why - because when you physically fight a character on the screen - you physically 'box' with the Wii controllers. This innate satisfaction is something the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 can't give you with just traditional pushing of buttons. Wii has saved a generation from RSI injuries from hitting buttons one too many times. The added bonus is burning calories while you play - a constant complaint from traditional consoles - that they were veg out machines created ever create obesity amongst the youth.

My prediction is that the PS3 and 360 next incarnations will have to have some sort of interactive controller.

The best console on the market is a question that will cause many debates and can depend not just on the machine but the games and add ons available for that machine - but the Wii certainly has people talking.

Pioneer BDP-95FD Blu-Ray Disc Reviews For the Multi-Region Version

This player is amazing. It's clearly better than the first gen players, bdps1, even the bd91. there are a few little things to consider about blu ray. It SHOULDN'T play cds. if you have 1000 to spend on an Elite blu ray, then you should have good money, like 600 for a Cambridge azure or a like 24 bit cd player. blu ray lasers are very narrow, and will not read cds correctly, and to make them do so would be way more work than is considered worthwhile by the major manufacturers.

That being said, DROOL! best upscaling I have seen on any player to date, full streaming features, and the Pioneer Elite look. It's a really good player and I for one think that it's the best to date.

It plays CDs, as well as internally decodes advanced audio (minus DTS-HD Master) into PCM for transmission over HDMI or analog, for all the legacy receivers out there.

Very nice Blu Ray player though with many nice features. Loads like a computer not as fast as a regular player but no big deal. This model is much better than the last from this line. Picture and sound is so wonderful on a Pioneer Plasma TV.I also have the Elite VSX-91TXH amp to go with my system Great Work Pioneer but work on the prices ok.

According to the manual for the BDP-94FD, the connector diagram on page 11 shows 8 RCA connectors to support 7.1.

I doubt there will be any major physical changes between the BDP-94FD and the to-be-released BDP-95FD.

I don't claim any special expertise but my experience with Pioneer Elite has been my barometer. I bought a second DVD a couple of years back to support both DVD and SACD which my Denon did not. The Pioneer bested the Denon in both Picture Quality and musicality in my setup AND the Pioneer is still working, the Denon's motor went about 6 months ago. Sounds real simple to me...........

How very happy am I that I was a Pioneer Elite "Target"...The VSX-94 is beyond comprehension, when matched with the Bdp-95, life becomes absolutly, hilariously in harmony..that, and after it took two weeks complete a very effective hook up, I WAS AT ONE WITH ELITEZEN MANUALS....
I just picked up a Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD from the Pioneer Store in Costa Mesa.

I will keep this first post for answers to common questions so that new owners get answers quickly.

Does the Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD generate the DTS-HD Master Audio Bitstream that can be decoded by the receiver / processor?

-- Yes. My Integra DTC-9.8 displays 'DTS-HD MSTR' when I select DTS-HD Master Audio sound track from disk. Audio is un-frig'in-believable!

Are the load times improved over the 94HD?

-- Using POTC: COTBP as a benchmark, it took 22 seconds from pressing START on the remote to the POTC "loading..." message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear

How does the PQ of the 95FD compare to the 94HD?

-- Very similar - 95FD just slightly sharper

How well does the 1080p24fps work:

-- Flawlessly

How is good is the DVD SD upconversion on the BDP-95FD?

-- Excellent (better than the BDP-94HD and the HD1)

I have been watching Kingdom of Heaven Blu Ray while listening to the DTS-HD MA sound track (Integra displays DTS-HD MSTR :-) Sounds un-frig'in-believable.

Player seems to be operating flawlessly. Boot up time very acceptable. Responds to remote immediately. It is difficult to tell if there are any PQ differences from the PS3 that I had but the DTS-HD MA is mind blowing...

It just took 35 seconds from pushing the close button on the remote to Kingdom of Heaven to begin playing...

With Disk in DVD player and player on stop, using POTC: COTBP it took 22 seconds for the POTC loading message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear...

After setting it up I can't help feeling déjà vu all over again. As you can see in the pic it does look nearly identical to the 94HD and HD1. I do like the class look it has though. I really like that high gloss piano finish look. As Tony said it takes about 35 seconds for titles to start playing. Which actually is a pretty BIG improvement over the two older models. Just like the others initial set up is a breeze. I do like the Pioneer start up screen better on the 95FD. It just looks cooler. I am not only comparing this unit to its brothers (or cousins) but also to the Samsung 1400. This ELITE unit costs more but you feel like it is money well spent.

Once again I love having the resolution button on the remote. Being able to change it on the fly is so much nicer then having to stop the movie and go into the set up menu (like the 1400 and HD DVD players). If there is one feature other manufacturers could learn from Pioneer that would be a good one to start with. Also, having 1080p/23.98 (24) done without issues is a breath of fresh air. Toshiba has been struggling as many of us know so it is nice to get a unit out of the box (just like the 1400, 94HD and HD1) that can do 1080p/23.98 without any EDID issues. I have not spent a great amount of time with this unit but from what I have I can say it is THE best Blu ray player on the market.

The picture Q is very colorful and very sharp. It bests the very impressive (especially for its price) Samsung 1400. Not by a lot in terms of pic Q but when you add the entire package together you know why the Pioneer is more. Picture settings, menu options, great remote (which is light years ahead of the competition) and of course a great picture with great sound. Speaking of sound I have only done a couple of comparisons so far but it is too easy to select bitstream passing in the menu. No confusion here. You are either sending D.D. or DTS via HDMI or PCM... Your call. That easy. I will do more on audio soon but sending the audio to my receiver (Onkyo 905) sounded great just as I expected. It also sounded good the few minutes I had the 95FD doing it. I am not going to say which is better because I do not want to open that can of worms again. So do not ask here. PM me.

I am using the new Sony VPL- VW60 "Black Pearl" (which is the 3rd pic) for all of my comparison so far. It handles 1080p/23.98 like a champ. I can also send it straight into my crystalio II and then tweak the image before sending it to the VW60 in 1080p/23.98. The Pioneer 95FD gets along with all of my other components which I do not take for granted these days.

And yes I am making reference to the XA2 and A35 which are stubborn when it comes to sending 1080p/24 to some displays. In direct comparison to the 94HD the 95FD is obviously a more flexible unit with a little quicker load times. Being able to pass HBR audio directly to the receiver for decoding is a really cool feature. Especially if you purchased one of the newer ones that can decode it. The picture Q is very close. I keep going back and forth. Going straight to my pj it does look like the 95FD is just a little more sharper but their brilliant colors are nearly identical. I will say the home media gallery looks more refined on the 95FD. I have never really got into that feature before but now I am intrigued so I may just jump in!

Bottom line is if you have the 94HD and do not care about the bitstream audio feature then there is absolutely no reason to dump it for the 95FD. However, if you do not and are interested in getting the best Blu ray unit in terms of features and pic/sound Q then look no further than the 95FD! I hate to keep picking the new Pioneer units as my favorite Blu ray unit but honestly the other companies are still two steps behind. The 95FD is the starter in my set up. More to come (SD DVD versus the A35 and XA2 and even 1400) as well as a few more thoughts on audio...BTW, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (BR) is looking and sounding awesome on this unit! Pick up a copy!

Well, I am pleasantly surprised to post that the 95FD has excellent upconversion. Much better than the 94HD and HD1. I even put it through the HQV Blu ray benchmark tests and it handled them very good. Especially my favorite stadium torture test! And as tradition lately it even made my adult videos look great! It is right on par with the A35 and XA2. I will work harder tomorrow and do real side by side comparisons (1400 included) but my first initial impressions are very good to excellent... Have you compared a 5.1 PCM track coming out of the PS3 vs. 95? I know there should not be a noticeable difference, but if you would not mind doing a comparison I would be curious to know for sure.

It is not surprising that DTS-MA sounds better from the 95 as we are getting the full signal vs. only the 1.5 core of the PS3. Can't wait to hear this!
The DTS-HD hi res is from the King Of New York's DTS HD soundtrack (I am reviewing) and the DTS-HD MASTER is from the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer soundtrack which states it is DTS-HD MASTER...

As I posted earlier in this thread the 1400 is very close but the 95FD produces a sharper image. I also prefer it for SD DVD upconversion. I also prefer all the other cool features like the resolution button on the remote. It is much nicer being able to change resolutions on the fly then having to hit stop and go into a set up menu. Especially when you are trying to compare them! I have spent awhile this afternoon playing different blu ray discs but tomorrow I will do my comparisons between the XA2 for SD DVD upconversion. I predict the 95FD will be on par with the XA2. We need to find out which chip it is using because it is by far much better than the 94HD and HD1... More to come tomorrow...

If the 95 can match the XA2 on SD upscaling this is a tremendous plus. The XA2 makes new DVDs almost look like HD and the only players so far that can do the same job are the very Hi-end Denon's or players costing 5 times more. The Samsung 1200 has the same Reon chip and should also be great but lacks the new audio features. Depending on your tests I will be a new 95 owner soon.

I have the bdp-95fd and the pdp-6010fd display. Extremely happy with it. Firmware support has been excellent. I am using it with a TacT 2.2x digital preamp, TacT digital Boz amp, Escalante Pinyons and a pair of Escalante subs. My connection is through the coax digital output. I have had an signature upgraded Denon 3930 in my system using the same set-up and I must say the sound quality and bass impact blows me away on the bpd-95fd In stock form, the Pioneer bpd-95fd is an excellent performer in terms of audio and video.

Given my system can only process two channel audio through the digital output, am I getting the two channel version decoded Dolby Digital Plus?

Things You Should Know About High Def TVs

Any new technology has at least a little learning curve to it, but high def TVs seem to have a really big one, for good reason. Instead of just one technology, high def TVs are an amalgam of a dozen or so: plasma TVs, LCD TVs, DLP TVs, Blu-ray disk technology, new cable and satellite broadcast technology, cabling technology - the list goes on. Worse, for the nontechnophile, there is no easy way to understand what's going on. The interaction of all these different technologies can lead to problems even for the specialist installers.

There are a few things you should know, though, that will help you head trouble off before it impacts you.

1. Do the HD math before you buy your set. Not all plasma TVs have HD capacity. You want to get a set that adheres to one of the two broadcast standards: 1280x720 (720p) and 1920x1080 (1080i or 1080p). Why? If you don't have a television that brings in at least the lower of these resolutions, you won't be receiving the full band capacity being sent to your set, resulting in either resolution issues or no picture.

2. Just because you bought an HD-capable set does not mean you'll be able to bring in your cable company's HD signal! Broadcast standards coming up only require digital - DTV - capable sets, and those that claim to be capable of HD may still need an adapter. An "HD ready" television is capable of showing HD, but does not necessarily have an HD tuner, which you need to translate the signal; worse, older sets advertised as HD ready may not display your full HD resolution. "Full HD" only means that the set is 1080p or better, not that it has a tuner. Lesson here: make sure your TV has the HD tuner.

3. Don't think you have to use the expensive HDMI cables just because the guy in the store says you do. The advantages of HDMI cable are improved shielding and an all-in-one video and audio capacity. Standard DVI-D cables, provided they are short and new, do just as well in most cases and are significantly cheaper. However, they should be either new or guaranteed free of shorts and dirt. Any interference in a standard television will just cause degradation of signal; for a high-def TV, you lose your picture entirely.

4. You can use your high-def TV to record HD signals to DVDs and even VHS, but you won't have a lot of capacity. Blu-ray recordings or recordings to a computer or separate hard drive are your best bet.

5. If your image carries "artifacts" such as a wavy background or "swarms" around images, it's not your set, it's your HD provider. You can't do much about it except whine to them and hope they open up more HD channels to carry their crowded signals - not likely. One option is to purchase a device like the Algolith Mosquito HDMI to clean up your signal - but it's more expensive than most plasma TVs, at about three thousand bucks. Your other option is to wait a couple of years for the problem to resolve itself as cable and digital technology improve, or change your provider.

6. Read your high-def TV's manual. Whether you have a plasma TV or an LCD TV, the manual will give you information that you desperately need, whether you know it or not. Don't expect to operate your television out of the box. Instead, schedule yourself some "me and the TV" time so you'll have time to get to know the different options before they become problems.

I did not purchase this player from Amazon, but I did get it off of Ebay. If you want to use the USB or SD inputs the video format that works the best is SVCD, the AVI formats mostly did not work with various codecs. Also, regular VCD format worked, but you could not skip through different chapters.

The unit is very light and the power supply or wall wart is a modern "switching" type like a cell phone charger. It has played all of my burned DVD+R discs without any skipping or freezing.

Funny thing though, the unit is supposed to be set to REGION 1 or USA, but it will not play any rented or purchased DVD discs. But will play a burned image of the same disc.

If anyone knows any Supersonic region codes, please help.

How to Download an Audio Book From Your Hard Disk to Your Non-iPod Media Player

This article describes how to download an audio book file to most common brands of portable media player eg, Digital River, Creative, Sandisk etc. It is not applicable to Apple's iPod or some other digital players that require proprietary download software provided with the devices. (If you have an iPod, see my other article "How to Download Your Audio Books to an iPod" also at EzineArticles.)

Once you have downloaded your audio book to a hard disk or other storage device you must open the first file of the audio from your computer if digital rights management(DRM) licensing is in effect. DRM processes usually place a file on your hard disk drive with licensing information indicating that you are the rightful owner of the content you have downloaded. This means you can then access the audio files without any problems.

When you click on the audio file to open it, a dialogue box appears asking you for your username and password. After entering them, you can continue to work with the digital files either by listening to them on your computer or copying them to your portable media player.

Most common brands of portable media players have the capacity to handle DRM licensed files.

Don't use your Internet Explorer program to copy files from your hard disk to your media player. It will copy them, but you will not be able to play them because Internet Explorer isn't capable of handling the DRM licensing process. Instead, use Windows Media Player (WMP or whatever software was provided by the manufacturer of your media player).

If you use Windows Media Player (make sure you have the latest version), you simply load WMP, locate your audio files so they are listed in the Title window, highlight the files and drag them to the right into the Sync List column. When you see the message "Ready to Synchronise" appear in the screen to the right of your digital audio file names in the Sync List, click the Start Synch button at the bottom of the screen. This will start the transfer of your files to your media player.

As soon as the files have been transferred, you can unplug your media player and listen to the files anywhere you wish.

I recommend you zip (compress the audio files) remaining on your hard disk drive and copy them to a CD as backup copies. That way you won't unnecessarily add to the clutter on your hard disk and if a disaster occurs, you'll still have the audio files you paid for.

It's hard to keep up on manufacturer's latest offerings. BluRay is still relatively new, but the manufacturer;s have been falling all over themselves offering new models with a baffling array of differentiating features. But the latest isn't necessarily the greatest. Pioneer's BDP-51FD may be an older model, but it is still a great BluRay player. Many newer players offer BD-live or the ability to directly download films from the likes of Amazon or Netflix. But how well do they do the job of playing BluRay discs?

The many Amazon reviews suggest the offerings from mass market manufacturer's may be less than all the glitzy features suggest. While the prices are low (in fact the cost of these things has dropped like a rock in the past year), performance and consistency seem to match. Quirky to downright poor performance have been described for the products from many of Pioneer's competitor's.

The BDP-51FD is larger, heavier and slower to load than newer models, but the picture quality and sound is great. It's build quality is comparable to several much more expensive high end models, but it's price has dropped from it's original offering price, making it a bargain.

This player provides valuable set-up flexibility, including the ability to pass an unaltered video signal to your AV receiver or processor. While the BDP-51FD does an excellent job with hi-def material and as good a job on standard def as many other good players, this pass-thru feature can allow you to experience superior std def upscaling if you have the video processing flexibility and power in other components. Very few lower end players offer this and you might need to spend many hundreds, if not thousands more for a BluRay transport that doesn't process the video, but passes it thru.

Pioneer has had this player on the market for over a year, and the bugs are gone. With recent firmware upgrades, it now properly handles the high end audio codecs.

I purchased a factory refurb model (B stock) making this an even more affordable buy. Many buyers steer clear of refurbs thinking they are buying someone els's problems. This is just not true.

For many years I owned a computer sales and service company and sold many "Factory Reconditioned" products alongside "Brand New" of the same model. My experience was that we never had a customer return a refurb. The same can't be said for brand new items.

It seems the refurbs, once returned to the manufacturer's, receive a thorough reconditioning and testing prior to being re-sold as "B" stock. The best part for the consumer is that they get a top notch, more thoroughly tested product at considerable savings.

BOTTOM LINE:

For high-end video and audio performance with exceptional build quality at a bargain price, buy a reconditioned BDP-51FD. You won't be sorry. (And, no, I'm not in the business and don't make money selling these things.)
